Over-wintered nucleus colonies are the backbone of a sustainable apiary. I have a limited amount of these for sale this year. These 5 frame deep nucleus hives are headed by a queen mated during the summer of 2023, that has successfully over-wintered here near Buffalo, MN. I raise queens every season from my best stock. These are Minnesota queens that are born, bred and sold here in Minnesota. My bees remain here in MN all year and I don’t buy queens from any other producer and sell them in my nucs. The nucs have 3-4 frames of brood in all stages (eggs, larvae and capped), plus 1 frame of nectar/brood/pollen. All the brood in the nuc has been laid by the new queen in the nuc. Generally these nucs are busting at the seams, and need to have another nuc super added, or moved to larger equipment quickly after sale.
In my own operation, these over-wintered nucleus colonies are the flywheel of my apiary. These primarily become my honey producing colonies. An over-wintered queen in her first spring build up is in her prime. With these nucs, you will get a colony that is ready to peak around the beginning of our MN honey flow in late June/early July, if you have drawn comb to give them. If you have no drawn comb, you will need to feed them, to get your new foundation drawn out.

- When you checkout on the website, the nucs will be reserved for the pick up date you selected. No payment is required at checkout time, it’s just a reservation system.
- Payment will be collected at pick up time. Accepted payment methods: cash, check or Venmo. I will contact you via email 1 week prior to pick up, with an invoice that you can pay at pick up time when you pick up the bees.
- Pick up dates are relative to the weather patterns. I will keep you informed if the nucs are ahead of schedule. I post conservative dates due to our MN weather! 2024 is looking to be early though…
